from the book 'Ten Imaginary Years'
On 7 December, the tour wound up at Crawley College, an event heralded by The Crawley News in an extraordinary article entitled "Split No Remedy For Cure's Ills": "I hope they will reconsider for, together, The Cure were something, apart, I believe they will be nothing..." wrote the zealous hack. "I only have to look at today's most successful groups to press home my point. Led Zeppelin has never gone down like the lead balloon it takes its name from largely because it has never changed. Deep Purple is dead and gone because it did. Only death has changed the line-ups of The Who and Rolling Stones. I may be jumping the gun but I think The Cure will start to fail tonight..."
Robert: "Some skinheads came and smashed the place up - they always did in Crawley. I remember we came off pretty disgusted because it was our home town concert and there were a lot of people there who liked us and wanted to see us and all I could see was people bottling each other."
Simon: "There was a lot of jealousy too. I remember going to the local record shop and people'd say 'My mate's much fucking better than you are. I don't know why you got the job'. We never played Crawley again."
